Hotel Santa Chiara photo

ABOVE: Venice airport buses and land taxis arrive and depart near the four-star Hotel Santa Chiara, which is alongside the Piazzale Roma overlooking the Grand Canal.

Cruise passengers: The hotels on this page are good choices if you're arriving or departing at the Marittima cruise port, which is a only a short ride from the Piazzale Roma on the luggage-friendly People Mover. (If your ship is at the San Basilio pier, you can reach it easily by taxi.)

Hotels on the Piazzale Roma (near taxis and airport buses):

  • View from Hotel Santa ChiaraHotel Santa Chiara (4 stars) is an ISO 9001-certified hotel on the edge of the Piazzale Roma, next to the Grand Canal and the Calatrava Bridge to the railroad station. Superior rooms have canal views, while some of the cheaper rooms are at the Residenza Parisi (near the Piazzale Roma vaporetto stop). Wi-Fi is free throughout the hotel. • AC Hotel Venezia by MarriottAC Hotel Venezia by Marriott opened in February, 2018 with 79 well-equipped rooms, many offering queen-sized beds. (See our illustrated review, which is packed with photos.) It's a modern, stylish "design hotel" built within the brick walls of an historic building, and it's extremely close to both ATVO airport buses and the People Mover. As you can see from the photo, one side of the hotel overlooks a quiet canal. Check guaranteed lowest rates, reviews, and availability:

  • Ca' DogeCa' Doge is a "town house suites, 1st category" property, which corresponds to a 3-star hotel. The Ca' Doge is next to the elevated People Mover, which will take you to the Marittima cruise port in less than two minutes. It offers free Internet access and has parking on the premises. • Casanova FourRoomsCasanova FourRooms  is a tiny B&B between Ca' Doge and the AC Hotel Venezia. Parking is available at the lot next door, albeit for a steep daily fee.(You'll check in at Ca' Doge, which is operated by the same management.) This property is just behind the Piazzale Roma, where it faces a quiet canal:

The following hotels are just beyond the Piazzale Roma over small footbridges:

  • Hotel ArlecchinoHotel Arlecchino (3 stars) is on the Fondamenta delle Burchielle, a 2½-minute walk from airport buses and taxis in the Piazzale Roma. Singles, doubles, triples, and quads are available, and guests have access to the garden of the Best Bestern Olimpia next door. Check guaranteed lowest rates, reviews, and availability:

  • Best Western Hotel Olimpia gardenHotel Olimpia (3 stars) is an excellent hotel just beyond the Arlecchino, alongside a canal next to the Piazzale Roma. (Allow 3 minutes for the easy walk.) The Olimpia offers a variety of room types, including junior suites, and it has a private garden with beach umbrellas and deck chairs. Free Wi-Fi is available in all public areas. • Hotel Alloggi Locanda MarinellaAlloggi  Marinella (3-star equivalent), a personal favorite, has unusually high guest ratings from Booking.com users. The inn's location is just about perfect: It's just a block from the Piazzale Roma, away from the parking garages and boat platforms but close enough for early airport-bus departures or catching a taxi to the cruise terminal. The walk takes only about 4½ minutes.

Cheryl Imboden at Alloggi MarinellaThe Alloggi Marinella also has a garden where you can sit and relax in warm weather. If your budget allows, spend a little extra for a superior room with a walled private patio.  (We stayed in a room with patio for a couple of days before an MSC Eastern Mediterranean cruise. See our illustrated Alloggi Marinella review.) Check guaranteed lowest rates, reviews, and availability:

  • photoHotel Canal & Walter (3 stars) has 33 rooms, some overlooking the Grand Canal. One- to four-person rooms are available, and breakfast is served in the hotel's garden courtyard during summer.  Check guaranteed lowest rates, reviews, and availability:

  • Hotel GardenaHotel Gardena (3 stars) is close to the Piazzale Roma, with two tiny bridges to cross, but you might think it's in a different world: The hotel is on a delightful neighborhood canal, and the cafés along the water are often filled with students and professors from the university nearby. Check guaranteed lowest rates, reviews, and availability:

  • Hotel Papadopli VeneziaHotel Papadopoli Venezia (Sofitel) (4 stars) is about 4½ minutes from the Piazzale Roma, just beyond a low footbridge and a curving path. The Papadopoli belongs to Sofitel's McGallery Collection of boutique hotels, and it's a good choice if you're looking for an upscale hotel with a bar, restaurant, concierge, and other services on the premises. Other hotels within walking distance of the Piazzale Roma:

Palazzo Odoni wellhead with candlesIf you prefer to be a little more distant from the buses, boats, and bustle of the Piazzale Roma, you could try Al Sole (3 stars), the Carlton on the Grand Canal (4 stars), or a Venetian mansion that doubles as a boutique hotel, the Palazzo Odoni (3 stars, photo at right). Please note that the term "distant" is relative: All of these hotels are within a five- to 10-minute walk of the Piazzale Roma, depending on your speed.

photoOr you could book a room at the Falier (2 stars), which is handy to one of the liveliest squares in Venice, the Campo Santa Margherita. It's an appealing choice if you're traveling with nothing larger than a midsized wheeled suitcase.

Note: These four hotels are about a 5-minute walk from the Piazzale Roma if you don't stop to look at your map.

For a charming and delightful location:

Hotel Ai Due FanaliIf you're willing to walk 7 to 10 minutes and cross two small footbridges, you won't go wrong with the cozy Ai Due Fanali (see our illustrated review), the Ca' Nigra Lagoon Resort with its huge garden, or the Canal Grande. All three hotels are on the Campo San Simeon Grande, a lovely and peaceful little square where you can sit on a park bench and watch boat traffic on the Grand Canal.

Apartments near Marittima:

If you'd like to settle in for a few days before or after a cruise, or if you prefer self-catering flats to hotels and restaurants, a vacation apartment is worth considering. Several are extremely close to the Piazzale Roma and the People Mover to the Marittima cruise terminals:

  • Venicedire is located right next to the Piazzale Roma. It's a very modern one-bedroom flat on the ground floor (three steps up from the sidewalk), making it convenient if you have heavy luggage. The living room has a sofa bed. As a bonus, you can park on site (albeit for a steep daily fee).

  • Sofia is a nicely renovated apartment on the Fondamenta Santa Chiara, by the vaporetto platforms and not far from the Santa Chiara Hotel. It's very atmospheric, thanks to its exposed roof beams and joists, and it has plenty of space for families, with a bedroom plus three sofa beds in the living room.

  • Le Burchielle is close to Piazzale Roma on the Fondamenta Burchielle, down the street from the Hotel Olimpia. It has two bedrooms (one with a queen bed, the other with two twins) and has a light, modern, airy decor.

  • Garden Houses are a few short streets and two small bridges away from Piazzale Roma, a block bey0nd the Alloggi Marinella. Three apartments are available: A two-bedroom split-level with terrace, a one-bedroom with terrace, and an upstairs one-bedroom without terrace.
