Hotel Mayet photo

Hotel Mayet ***

Bold murals in the lobby set the tone for this contemporary design hotel near the Duroc Métro station, a few blocks northwest of the Gare Montparnasse. Other examples of modern art are scattered throughout the public and guest rooms.

The Mayet has two dozen rooms, all with coffee- and tea-making facilities. The most compelling option, in our opinion, is the "comfort apartment," which comes with two single beds, a double sofa bed, a kitchenette, and even a washing machine.

In addition to the usual double rooms, the Millésime has a top-floor suite that you reach by climbing a flight of stairs from the fourth floor (the highest floor reached by the hotel's elevator). This "family apartment" can sleep up to four guests.

Bonus perks: The Millésime has a "welcome tray" with tea and coffee gear in every room, and you can borrow a mobile phone from reception for the duration of your stay.

Hotel de Nesle photo

Hotel de Nesle

Not all of the 18 single and double rooms at the Nesle have private baths, but many do. Rates for ensuite facilities are only a little higher than for shared baths, so we'd suggest booking early and paying a little extra for the convenience of having a place to hang your drip-dry underwear and socks.

Hotel de Nesle inset photoThe Hotel de Nesle's decor caters to travelers who are looking for quirky charm. Each room celebrates the personality of a famous neighborhood resident in a unique, colorful way. (Click the link above to view Booking.com's photo gallery for the hotel.) A garden adds to the Nesle's appeal.

Hotel du Lys

This former mansion dates back to the early 1600s, when the Boulevard Saint-Germain was at the edge of Paris. The hotel itself was founded in 1908, but it retains many of the building's original features, such as exposed oak beams and half-timbered interior walls.

The hotel's location is excellent: It's just above the Boulevard Saint-Germain, within easy walking distance of the Seine and the Saint-Michel - Notre Dame RER station, where you can catch trains to CDG and Orly Airports, the Eiffel Tower, and Versailles.

All of the single, double, twin, and triple rooms have private bathrooms, the hotel has an elevator, and--unusually for Paris--a Continental breakfast is included in the rates.
