To the right of the hostel is the Old Telegraph House, where news of Abraham Lincoln's assassination reached Europe. In those days, ships passing Fastnet Rock on their way to Northern Ireland or Scotland would send a pouch of telegrams by boat to Cape Clear Island for retransmission to Europe. (Not long afterwards, undersea cables made the Old Telegraph House redundant for international traffic.)
